Heard from the guys doing the garden today. We've always thought we had a well capped in the garden. Turns out that it's something more substantial, and they've no idea what it's for. It's far too substantial for a well cap, their ideas include some kind of footings for a structure which was never built, or a cantilever weight for the lounge.

Whatever it's for, they're not now going to remove it. They've taken 50cm off the top, and that's enough to extend the patio. Very pleased I didn't try and do it myself!
